Greetings
As my driver moves our vehicle along dirt tracks, past the ever-present piles of garbage and goats tied in the grass at the side, my eyes seek the children. They stare and wave at the Muzungu (white person) as we move past, skipping or even running alongside the car, half naked and in rags, but always smiling. Their lovely, deep black faces hold beautiful, perfect white teeth and eyes as dark and deep as a moonless village night.
During the 3 years I have worked in Uganda, it is still the children who delight me. Their innocence can’t be hidden and their laughter is infectious. Sitting in my friend’s house in Mwanyangiri, they find me, bringing a song, or a picture or a request. I am a novelty, whites are not generally seen in the village, and they know when I come that I bring them treats. Even when I am most tired they lift my spirit and remind me why I am there.
My work in Mwanyangiri began in November of 2005, before I even knew what it would ultimately look like. I came, knowing no one and left with many new friends and a vision of what accessible health care could be. By April of 2007 the Sally Clinic Project, of With Woman had opened the first, of what I hope will be many, clinics in rural Uganda. On less than $40,000 we have opened and are running a general medicine clinic with maternity services (serving over 600 patients a month over the last two years), we graded a road into the village to improve accessibility, and enhanced the primary education of 50 village children. Our vision is larger than what we have accomplished, and with the help of our donors we will continue to enhance this project.
Our goals for the future include: providing an on site water source and solar electricity, building a separate maternity unit, purchasing the building and plot that is the current clinic site, renovating the primary school and including all of the children that go there in the Kirabo Scholarship Fund, building the micro-finance/self-sufficiency project and branching out into other communities in need.
With the help of our donor partners we can achieve these goals and enrich the lives of many Ugandans.
